Factors Influencing Stem Density of Creekbank Spartina alterniflora in a New England Salt Marsh

چکیده
Stem density patterns for smooth cordgrass, Spartina alterniflora, are highly variable both among years and within the growing season. These variations can have consequences for the overall primary productivity of the salt marsh system, as well as its ability to provide essential ecosystem functions. In this study, I explored factors that could be driving observed variations in four tidal creeks of the Plum Island Sound Estuary, Massachusetts. End of season stem densities were measured at two of the creeks over eight years. Seasonal stem densities were measured at all four of the creeks four times during a single growing season. My objectives were to assess the influence of temperature, precipitation, tide level, and solar radiation on stem density variations among years, and to determine whether seasonal loss of stems was due to self-thinning or tidal action. Years with higher precipitation were associated with higher densities (p = 0.001), which may be due to an alleviation of salt stress in those years. Patterns of seasonal stem loss were more consistent with patterns of self-thinning, which has not been previously considered for S. alterniflora, than tidal action, which has been the predominant assumption. However, self-thinning and tidal action may be working in conjunction to cause seasonal stem loss. These results increase our ability to estimate S. alterniflora productivity, and our understanding of the species’ ecology and its responses to current and future climatological events. Introduction An estimated 40% of the world’s population lives within 100km of the coast (Martinez et al 2011). As a result, coastal ecosystems are some of the most threatened in

Ribbed Mussels and Spartina Alterniflora Production in a New England Salt Marsh
The ribbed mussel, Geukensia demissa, is commonly found associated with the salt marsh cordgrass, Spartina alterniflora. Mussels attach to the basal portion of S. alterniflora stems with strong proteinaceous byssal threads and deposit fecal material on the surrounding sediment as a byproduct of their filter-feeding activity. Here I demonstrate by manipulating mussel densities in the field that ...
متن کاملCompetitive interactions between native Spartina alterniflora and non-native Phragmites australis depend on nutrient loading and temperature
We explored the nature and impact of competitive interactions between the salt marsh foundational plant Spartina alterniflora and invasive Phragmites australis in New England under varying levels of anthropogenic influence from nutrient loading and temperature warming. Plants were grown with and without competition in mesocosms over a four-month growing season. Mesocosms were split evenly among...
متن کاملGenetic Diversity and Spatial Structure of Spartina alterniflora at Four Spatial Scales
Spartina alterniflora, salt marsh cordgrass, is the dominant plant in coastal wetlands along the North American Atlantic coast. Ecological disturbances in salt marshes, such as coverage by wrack, disease, and eat-outs, affects Spartina marshes from the Gulf of Mexico to New England and may reduce the diversity of S. alterniflora clones within a population or alter other genetic characteristics ...

We report here that substantial quantities of dissolved dimethylsulfonioproprionate (DMSP) are released from live leaves of Spartina alterniflora in Georgia, USA salt marshes during tidal submergence. Mean monthly in situ foliar release rates varied from 0.092 2 0.050 to 0.291 f 0.289 pm01 DMSP (g dry wt)-' h-'. Estimates of tidal release of DMSP from creekbank stands of S. alterniflora varied ...
متن کاملTidal influences on carbon assimilation by a salt marsh
Salt marshes are among the most productive ecosystems on Earth, and play an important role in the global carbon cycle. Net carbon dioxide (CO2) ecosystem exchanges in coastal salt marshes remain poorly investigated. In Spartina alterniflora dominated North American Atlantic coast marshes, the lack of a clear understanding of how Spartina alterniflora responds to flooding limits our current abil...
